Global methane emissions from the oil and gas sector 2000-2023

Global oil and gas operations produced almost 80 million metric tons of methane (CH4) in 2023. While oil production and use accounted for roughly 63 percent of this total, emissions from these operations fell by more than 15 percent between 2005 and 2023. In comparison, methane emissions from gas production and use grew by more than 50 percent during the same period. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 28 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period.
