Seismic imaging, used in energy exploration, is arguably the most compute and data intensive application in the private sector. The commonly used methods involve solving the wave equations numerically using finite difference formulations. Writing optimised code for these applications involves multiple man-years of effort that needs to be repeated every time a new development needs to be factored in – for every target platform. <br><br>DeVito is a new tool for performing optimised Finite Difference (FD) computation from high-level symbolic problem definitions. The application developer needs to provide a differential equation in symbolic form. DeVito performs automated code generation and Just-In-time (JIT) compilation based on this symbolic equation to create and execute highly optimised Finite Difference kernels on multiple computer platforms. DeVito has been designed to be used as part of complex workflows involving data flows across multiple applications over different nodes of a cluster.

DeVito是一款全新工具,可基于高层级符号化问题定义,实现优化后的有限差分(Finite Difference, FD)计算。应用开发者仅需以符号形式提供微分方程,DeVito即可基于该符号方程自动生成代码并进行即时编译(Just-In-time, JIT),从而在多种计算机平台上生成并运行高度优化的有限差分核函数。DeVito的设计目标是作为复杂工作流的组成部分,这类工作流需实现跨集群不同节点、多应用间的数据流转。
