The iron superoxide dismutase gene (SOD) was inactivated and replaced by a kanamycin cassette in A. macleodii ATCC 27126. This was done to investigate if this SOD and its isoform NiSOD are functional complements of each other. Relative to the WT, this FeSOD KO exhibited different growth behavior, with a clear increase in cell-cell aggregation and whole genome transcriptome profiling shows the absence of this SOD also significantly alters the genome-wide transcriptional response to Fe availability.
