ThisdocumentisasupplementtothePresident’s2015BudgetrequestsubmittedtoCongressonMarch4,2014.Itgivesadescriptionoftheactivitiesunderwayin2013and2014andplannedfor2015bytheFederalGovernmentagenciesparticipatingintheNationalNanotechnologyInitiative(NNI),primarilyfromaprogrammaticandbudgetaryperspective.ItisbasedontheNNIStrategicPlanreleasedinFebruary2014andreportsactualinvestmentsfor2013,estimatedinvestmentsfor2014,andrequestedinvestmentsfor2015byProgramComponentArea(PCA),ascalledforundertheprovisionsofthe21stCenturyNanotechnologyResearchandDevelopmentActof2003(PublicLaw108-153,15USC§7501).ThereportalsoaddressestherequirementforDepartmentofDefensereportingonitsnanotechnologyinvestments,per10USC§2358.ThePresident’s2015Budgetprovidesover$1.5billionfortheNationalNanotechnologyInitiative(NNI),acontinuedinvestmentinsupportofthePresident’sprioritiesandinnovationstrategy.Cumulativelytotalingnearly$21billionsincetheinceptionoftheNNIin2001(includingthe2015request),thissupportreflectsnanotechnology’spotentialtosignificantlyimproveourfundamentalunderstandingandcontrolofmatteratthenanoscaleandtotranslatethatknowledgeintosolutionsforcriticalnationalissues.TheNNIinvestmentsin2013and2014andthoseproposedfor2015continuetheemphasisonacceleratingthetransitionfrombasicR&Dtoinnovationsthatsupportnationalpriorities,whilemaintainingastrongbaseoffoundationalresearch,toprovideapipelineforfuturenanotechnology-basedinnovations.
