In 1986 CSIRO conducted a very large series of fire experiments in grasslands at Annaburroo Station in the Northern Territory. This work was supported by a number of rural fire authorities with the objective of quantifying the effect of fuel load on the behaviour and spread of free-burning grass fires. This collection collates the data collected from this experimental series which were used to develop the CSIRO Grassland Fire Spread Model published in 1998. Data include measurements and observations of fuel, weather and fire behaviour \nLineage: 121 experimental fires were conducted in grasslands of Annaburroo station. Two grass species were present on the site: Themeda and Eriachne. Plots were created that ranged in size from 100 m by 100 m to 300 m by 300 m. Prior to experimentation, grass on each plot was modified to produce one of three treatments--grass left modified (control), grass was mown and cuttings retained, and grass was mown and cuttings removed. Fuel attributes for each plot were measured across multiple transects; these included fuel height, fuel load, curing state. Four anemometers were placed on the corners of each plot and fires ignited on the upwind edge. Fire behaviour was observed on the ground and photographs of fire progression taken from a helicopter producing oblique view at regular intervals of fire spread.
