Cypris Marine Monitoring Station – Phytoplankton Biomass Data 1954 - 2012

The Cypris Monitoring Station dates back to 1954 and is located at 54°05’ 50” and 004°50’ 00”, roughly two nautical miles off the coast of Port Erin in the Isle of Man. Phytoplankton monitoring began at the Cypris site in 1995 until 2012 and as of May 2023 has restarted. Chlorophyll monitoring began in 1966 until 2014 and also restarted in May 2023. The following method was used: 4 litres of seawater filtered through 90 mm diameter Whatman GF/C filter paper the retentivity of which was improved with a suspension of powdered magnesium carbonate. The filter paper was manually macerated in 90% acetone, extracted overnight, centrifuged and the extinction of the supernatant measured at 750, 663, 645 and 630 nm. Calculation based on trichromatic equations given in Report of Scor-UNESCO (1964) working group 17 on Determination of photosynthetic pigments (mimeo), Sydney. Chlorophyll a is used as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass and is reported in Micrograms per Litre.
