Data and R Code for: Control-Value Appraisals, Chinese Learning Boredom, and Skill-Specific HSK Achievement: A Cross-Sectional Survey of International Students in China

This dataset contains the anonymized data, R code, and analysis outputs for the study “Control-Value Appraisals, Chinese Learning Boredom, and Skill-Specific HSK Achievement: A Cross-Sectional Survey of International Students in China.” Files raw_data_and_codebook.xlsx: anonymized questionnaire records (N = 812) and matched HSK section scores, with a codebook describing all variables. reproduce_all_tables_and_figures.R: R code that reproduces all tables and figures from the raw data. all_tables_and_figures.xlsx: output of the R code, including Tables 1–6, Tables S1–S3, Figures 1–2, statistics reported in the text, unrounded values, bootstrap resamples, the analytic sample (n = 594), and exclusion decisions. How to reproduce the results Install R (version 4.6.1 was used) and download all files from this record. Put raw_data_and_codebook.xlsx and reproduce_all_tables_and_figures.R in the same folder, and set that folder as the R working directory. Run source("reproduce_all_tables_and_figures.R", encoding = "UTF-8"). Missing R packages are installed automatically. When the run finishes, open output/all_tables_and_figures.xlsx and compare it with the tables and figures in the article. The 5000 bootstrap resamples may take tens of minutes to several hours. Exact bootstrap results require lavaan 0.7.3, seed 20260301, and 5 parallel cores (a computer with at least 5 cores); other settings may produce small differences in the second or third decimal place of bootstrap-based values.
