In this study, a multi-pronged molecular approach was employed to systematically compare the microbiota present within a cohort of subjects with various degree of periodontal disease: i.e. periodontitis and gingivitis. This included high-throughput pyrosequencing of the bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA gene amplicons; as well as the 'PathoChip' microarray profiling of genes previously associated with virulence.
