In 2009, the European Commission expanded the Periodic Land Use/Cover Area Frame Survey (LUCAS) to conduct sampling and analysis of key topsoil properties across the 23 member states of the European Union (EU). This topsoil survey represented the first attempt to establish a consistent spatial soil cover database across the EU using standardized sampling and analytical procedures, with all soil samples analyzed in a single central laboratory. Approximately 20,000 sampling points were selected from the main LUCAS grid for soil sample collection. Standardized sampling protocols were employed to collect roughly 0.5 kilograms of topsoil at a depth of 0–20 cm. The collected samples were sent to a central laboratory for physical and chemical analysis.
