Radiographic study of multiple chronic traumatic lesions of the forelimbs in a wolf (Canis lupus italicus) from the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise

In November 2023, a 5-month-old female Apennine wolf (Canis lupus italicus) was recovered from the Umbria region and transferred to the wildlife area of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. After an initial acclimatization period in isolation, she was introduced into the common enclosure with the resident pack. In August 2024, she developed severe lameness in the left forelimb. A radiographic examination performed in October of the same year, revealed transverse diaphyseal fracture of the left radius and ulna, accompanied by marked periosteal reaction, moderate bone resorption, and surrounding soft tissue swelling. Additionally, a luxation of the third digit’s metacarpophalangeal joint in the right manus was observed. These findings were consistent with chronic traumatic injuries, fracture and luxation, associated with periostitis and osteomyelitis, likely caused by bites from other wolves. Despite the severity, the fractures were stable, and the right manus lesion did not impair weight-bearing. A conservative treatment approach was chosen. The wolf has since made a full clinical recovery but has not yet been reintegrated into the pack.
