Oceanographic station data from bottle casts from the BIBB from Ocean Weather Station E (OWS-E) in the North Atlantic Ocean from 25 August 1972 to 17 September 1972 (NODC Accession 7300325)

Oceanographic station data were collected from the BIBB within a 1-mile radius of Ocean Weather Station E (3500N 0480W) and in transit. Data were collected by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) from 25 August 1972 to 17 September 1972. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Station Data II Output Format (SD2). The SD2 format contains physical-chemical oceanographic data recorded at discrete depth levels. Most of the observations were made using multi-bottle Nansen casts or other types of water samplers. A small amount (about 5 percent) were obtained using electronic CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) or STD (salinity-temperature-depth) recorders. The CTD/STD data were reported to NODC at depth levels equivalent to Nansen cast data, however, and have been processed and stored the same as the Nansen data. Cruise information (e.g., ship, country, institution), position, date, and time, and reported for each station. The principal measured parameters and temperature and salinity , but dissolved oxygen, phosphate, total phosphorus, silicate, nitrate, nitrite, and pH may be reported. Meteorological conditions at the time of the cast (e.g., air temperature and pressure, wind, waves) may also be reported, as well as auxiliary data such as water color (Forel-Ule scale), water transparency (Secchi disk depth), and depth to bottom. Values of density (sigma-t) sound velocity, and dynamic depth anomaly are computed from measured parameters. Each station contains the measurements taken at the observed depth levels, but also includes data values interpolated to a set of standard depth levels.

SD2格式包含离散深度层记录的物理化学海洋学数据。大部分观测采用多瓶式Nansen采水器（Nansen casts）或其他类型的水样采集装置完成；仅约5%的观测数据通过电子CTD（电导率-温度-深度，conductivity-temperature-depth）或STD（盐度-温度-深度，salinity-temperature-depth）记录仪获取。不过，CTD/STD数据是以与Nansen采水器观测一致的深度层级上报至NODC的，其处理与存储流程与Nansen采水器数据完全一致。

每个观测站均记录有航行相关信息（如船舶、所属国家、研究机构）、站位坐标、观测日期与时间。核心观测参数为温度与盐度，同时也可记录溶解氧、磷酸盐、总磷、硅酸盐、硝酸盐、亚硝酸盐及pH值等指标。观测时的气象条件（如气温、气压、风向风速、海浪状况）亦可被记录，此外还包含辅助观测数据，例如水色（弗洛尔-于勒色度标度，Forel-Ule scale）、水体透明度（塞氏盘深度，Secchi disk depth）及海底深度。密度（sigma-t）、声速及动态深度异常值由实测参数计算得到。每个观测站既包含实测深度层的观测数据，也包含经插值得到的标准深度层数据集。
