FAIRsharing record for: NIH Genomic Data Sharing (GDS) Policy

This FAIRsharing record describes: NIH expects the broad and responsible sharing of human as well as non-human genomic data resulting from NIH-funded research because the timely sharing of research results can accelerate discoveries that improve our ability to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease. The NIH Genomic Data Sharing (GDS) policy provides the basic framework for sharing genomic data generated from all NIH-funded research. In compliance with the GDS policy, NIH expects investigators and institutions to: 1) develop and provide a plan for sharing genomic data, 2) provide an Institutional Certification form before the notice of award (if working with human data), 3) share genomic data in a timely manner to an appropriate repository, 4) responsibly use controlled-access data, and 5) appropriately cite controlled-access data in publications and presentations where applicable. The NIH Genomic Data Sharing (GDS) policy provides the basic framework for sharing genomic data generated from all NIH-funded research. However, individual NIH Institutes and Centers (IC) may have additional expectations or requirements for genomic data sharing as well. For each IC, note when baseline expectations apply as well as any additional IC-specific requirements.
