The purpose of the Observation Book was for the Inspector to record general remarks about the management of the school, the relationships and discipline within it, and the range and effectiveness of the teaching. The Regulations under the Public Schools Act, 1866 noted that,"The Inspector remarks upon the state of the school visited by him, will be entered in the Observation Book of the school, which, as a School Record, should be carefully preserved. Entries therein are not to be erased or altered." (Regulations adopted by the Council of Education on 27 February 1867, s. 83)This series is currently represented by three volumes, which record the reports on inspections of the School carried out between 1914 and 1955. Up until the report for the inspection held in October, 1925, these are all handwritten transcripts of the original reports (with occasional, corrected, errors of transcription); thereafter, they are normally Roneo’ed copies of typescript originals, except that several pages of the report for 1933 are carbon copies of pages in manuscript. These transcripts and copies are all signed by the Inspector of Schools, and in some cases by the Assistant Chief Inspector, to certify that they are accurate copies. Where these signatures are dated, they are invariably found to have been added several weeks after the date of the actual inspection, indicating that the Inspector had re-visited the school for the purpose of examining the Observation Book. The reports include observations on the physical conditions at the school, but concentrate mostly on the teaching methods used in each particular class, the calibre of the pupils, and the academic results achieved. The names of individual staff members are often given, though not invariably; those of pupils almost never. The Annexe operated by the High School on the premises of the Technical College in Hunter Street, Newcastle, during the years 1932 and 1933 is the subject of a separate report in 1932, but is included in the report for the main school in 1933.The volume for the years 1914-1932 is of the quarter-leather bound journal type; the other two are of sewn signatures with rigid card covers and cloth spines. Despite signs of wear, and some stress resulting from the additional bulk of the pasted-in copies, all are substantially sound.
