Railway Books and Plans have been produced since 1849 to plot existing or prospective railway corridors and the placement of associated railway infrastructure on Crown Land or privately owned land portions throughout New South Wales, to ensure the adequate provision of material necessary for the construction and upkeep of corridors and infrastructure.The arrangement of Railway Books and Plans varies across the series. Where some plans utilise the “large number-small number” standard established by the Crown Plan series, others invert this convention and are numbered using a “small prefix-large number” arrangement.

该系列档案与图纸的编排方式各有不同。部分图纸采用王室图纸系列（Crown Plan series）所确立的"大编号-小编号"编号标准，其余图纸则打破这一惯例，采用"小编号前缀-大编号"的编号规则。
