This project plans and constructs the urban forest i-Tree information management platform by referencing the i-Tree software tool developed by the USDA Forest Service. The website's infrastructure is primarily based on the open-source content management system Drupal 7, and uses the current open-source template Bootstrap 3 as the layout foundation. It not only adopts a responsive design layout to align with the current multi-platform usage trend, but also features an intuitive and smooth user interface design. Its database adopts the open-source MariaDB to avoid vendor lock-in caused by over-reliance on proprietary application software.
The core planning content of this project focuses on introducing the usage methods and application scopes of the i-Tree tool suite developed by the USDA Forest Service, and translating and organizing its documents to promote the popularization of this tool in Chinese-speaking regions. Meanwhile, it showcases the ongoing experimental research progress carried out by Taiwan's local survey team in accordance with the i-Tree (Eco) tool.
The website platform is mainly divided into three core sections: What is i-Tree?, Taiwan Implementation Project, and i-Tree Tools, with supplementary resources including partners and site map provided as additional reference materials.
In the two metropolitan areas of Taipei and Kaohsiung, volunteers from the Taiwan Museum and Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park have been trained following the standard i-Tree operational procedures. The goal is to enable these trained volunteers to conduct surveys of urban parks and street trees, so as to facilitate future promotion and expand the mechanism for public participation.
Meanwhile, the Chinese localization of the i-Tree standard survey procedure manuals has been completed, covering a total of seven volumes including i-Tree Eco, i-Tree Street, i-Tree Hydro, i-Tree Storm, i-Tree Vue, i-Tree Species Selector, and IPED. This localization work has been linked on the official US i-Tree website, serving as a successful cooperation case between forestry-related departments in Taiwan and the US, and the translation work for the latest versions is being continuously updated.
Additionally, a portable version of the simplified operation procedures has been produced to provide reference for field surveys, so as to support subsequent volunteer training for domestic seed teachers.
We have contacted the core designers of the US i-Tree team, and conducted exchanges with Dr. David Nowak, the team leader, and his team members to gain first-hand insights into the evolution and future development direction of the system. It is expected that after mastering relevant information such as the system architecture and operating procedures, our researchers will supplement and establish localized datasets, thereby improving Taiwan's urban forest and tree information management capabilities, and further enhancing the service quality of urban forest information management.
