Genomic surveillance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Kyoto and Osaka, Japan in 2015

After the first extensively drug resistant (XDR) Neisseria goorrhoeae strain with high resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs) was identified in 2009 in Japan, no similar strain has been found. Here, surveillance has not been based on genome sequences. In this project, we conducted an active genomic surveillance to explore what kind of population structures exist at the genomic level, whether there are lineages exhibiting unusual antimicrobial susceptibilities, and how resistance determinants are distributed in this region.
