Web services are often protected by challenges that are easily solvable by humans but difficult for computers to complete. Such challenges are commonly referred to as CAPTCHAs (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) or HIPs (Human Interactive Proofs). HIPs serve various purposes, such as reducing email and blog spam, and preventing brute-force attacks on website passwords. Asirra (Animal Species Image Recognition for Restricting Access) is a type of HIP that works by requiring users to identify photos of cats and dogs. This task is difficult for computers, yet studies have shown that humans can complete it quickly and accurately. What makes Asirra unique is its partnership with Petfinder.com, one of the world's largest websites dedicated to finding homes for homeless pets. It has provided over 3 million manually classified images of cats and dogs to Microsoft Research, with the classifications performed by staff at thousands of animal shelters across the United States. Kaggle is fortunate to have made a subset of this data available for recreational and research purposes.
