Flying insects that emerge from streams are important food sources for insectivores living on the shore, such as spiders. However, chemical pollution present in the water can affect these insects and the spiders relying on them. In this study we investigated changes in the diet of spiders near streams exposed to different levels of wastewater and pesticide pollution. We found slight changes in the flying insect community, and found that spiders consumed more midges and fewer other flies at more polluted streams. This shows that effects of stream pollution can induce changes in the food web, including for terrestrial organisms.
