Replication Data for: Research Career Paths Among Political Scientists in Teaching Institutions

Considerable work assesses research productivity in political science. Yet the latter work has not explicated how research careers can differ across time and individuals, nor has it considered such careers in teaching institutions in particular. I present an empirically validated research career path typology for political scientists who began their careers in teaching institutions. The typology demonstrates many scholars follow paths different from the most conventional expectations, and research “success” by measures of publications and citations is only associated with some of these paths. Thus existing research on aggregate publications and citations likely only addresses a subset of the career paths revealed here. Understanding research activities in our profession requires accounting for the various career paths, their motivations, and their places in our research community.

学界已有大量研究评估政治学领域的科研产出表现。然而，此类研究尚未阐明科研生涯如何随时间与个体差异发生演变，亦未专门探讨教学型院校背景下的科研生涯。本文提出一种经实证验证的科研生涯路径分类体系，面向职业生涯起步于教学型院校的政治学者。该分类体系显示，诸多学者所遵循的生涯路径与学界主流预期存在显著差异；而以发表成果与引用量为衡量标准的科研"成功"，仅与其中部分路径相关联。因此，现有针对发表总量与引用总量的研究，可能仅覆盖了本文所揭示的生涯路径中的一部分。若要深入理解本学科的科研活动，就必须充分考量各类科研生涯路径、其背后的驱动动机，以及其在学术共同体中的定位。
