Mangroves are considered one of the most productive ecosystems on the planet, its proper functioning depends directly on the microbial component which consists mostly by bacteria. However, they are constantly exposed to a wide range of anthropogenic disturbances, such as industrial waste water discharges in where elevated concentrations of heavy metals are usually identified.The microbiome inhabiting on the mangrove sediment has the ability to adapt to the increased concentration of metals. Hence, the ability to determine sentinel bacteria that respond particularly to a given types of contaminants constitutes and important procedure in developing strategies to maintain and restore this type of ecosystem.
