The goal of this study is to analyse the change in the composition and structure of bacterial communities along a vertical profile of Arctic multi-year sea ice. Sea ice was cored off the northern tip of Ellesmere Island NU Canada and sectioned in to 30 cm intervals. DNA was then extracted from these sections and the V1-V3 regions of the 16S rRNA gene were sequenced using 454 pyrosequencing.
