Indonesia Social and Economic Survey (Susenas 2004) is a nationwide survey conducted to collect information on social and economics indices. It serves as a main source of monitoring of social and economic progress in the society. Susenas was conducted on an annual basis since 1963. In 1992, in addition to a basic social and economic questionnaire (core), another questionnaire was introduced which gathers more detailed information on special interest topics (module). The core covers basic household and individual characteristics including health, death, education/literacy, employment, fertility and family planning, housing, and household expenditure. This questionnaire is asked annually with only slight modification in subsequent years. Susenas 2004 core covers 252,913 households and is designed to be representative up to district/municipality levels. The module is intended to gather more detailed information on specific topics, especially on data that changed less frequently than yearly. There are three modules of Susenas and each module is added in a three-year cycle. In 2004, the module's topic was housing and health. The data set covered 66,755 households. Both core and module questionnaires collect data on household and individual characteristics. In the archive deposit, Susenas 2004 core was divided into two data files containing household and individual characteristics, respectively (study IDs 01177 and 01178 respectively). Susenas 2004 module data were split into four main data files, which contain information on household member characteristics (study ID 01180), housing and health expenditure characteristics (study ID 01179), individual characteristics of children under 5 years of age (study ID 01181), and individual health characteristics of the selected respondent (study ID 01182). Merging among data files of Susenas 2004 is possible using following key variables: province, district/city, sub district, village, and household code. The present data file - Household Characteristics (Core) - contains household data gathered from core questionnaires. It includes information about identification of place, household characteristics, housing, household expenditure, other socio-economic information, and paddy farming characteristics.
