Quorum sensing has been implicated as an important global regulatory system controlling the expression of numerous virulence factors in bacterial pathogens. From the similarities between the components of quorum-sensing systems in Vibrio vulnificus and in V. harveyi, it seemed logical to consider that SmcR, a V. vulnificus LuxR homologue, is a quorum-sensing regulator of V. vulnificus. Moreover recent work demonstrated that SmcR regulates virulence genes and adaptive phenotypes. A smcR mutant was constructed and phenotype changes between the smcR mutant and its parental wild type ATCC29307 were evaluated and gene expression profiles of the wild type and those of the smcR mutant were analyzed using V. vulnificus whole genome microarray.
