The 2004 Survey of NHMRC Research Workforce Outcomes was conducted by the University of Queensland via a contract with the Department of Health and Ageing and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The purpose of the project was to allow for the identification of short and long term research outcomes from NHMRC researchers who had been granted NHMRC People Support Awards (PSAs) during the period 1992-2002. The principle aim of the survey was to gather data on recipients' perceptions of the impact of their awards upon their career development, research training and research capacity building. The survey contains sections concerning the perceived impact of PSA research upon the activities of other health professionals, policy makers and the general public. Key sets of questions address career developments (details of publications, inventions, research tools, patents, basic scientific advances, service delivery outcomes, public health outcomes, commercial developments) that are directly attributable to the PSA. Additionally there are questions regarding motivating factors in applying for PSAs, respondents' broader career objectives and perceived impediments to career development. There is also a section that asks respondents to assess the usefulness of PSAs in assisting researchers to develop important skills and training that are relevant for meeting national and international medical research development needs. Background variables include age, gender, highest completed academic qualifications and the field of study, details of current study, the type of institution that administered the PSA and occupations held since the award of the first PSA.
