Research on the Evolution and Digital Restoration of the "Jili" Clothing Style of Qing Dynasty Emperors

This study systematically explores the evolution of form cultural symbols and digital restoration methods of the the “Jili” (auspicious) robes worn by emperors of the Qing Dynasty. Based on the "Five Rites" system of the Qing Dynasty, this paper examines the ritual connotations of the Jili robes, emphasizing their role in mediating the relationship between heaven and humanity and manifesting imperial authority. Through systematic analysis of the “Wearable Archives” of the Qing court, the physical artifacts housed in the Palace Museum (Beijing), and relevant historical documents, this research investigates in detail the forms—styles, colors, and patterns—of the emperors’ Jili robes across various ritual occasions, together with their strict wearing regulations. The close connection between these formal features and the Qing ritual–institutional system, as well as their symbolic functions within imperial political culture, is also elucidated. To effectively inherit and protect this important cultural heritage, this study adopts innovative digital restoration methods, taking as a case study the “Red Satin Embroidered Cloud-and-Golden-Dragon Imperial Robe” worn by Emperor Jiaqing on his memorial day. By using the Style3D software platform and integrating high-precision mapping, color analysis, pattern extraction, and virtual human modeling, the study accomplishes a complete digital reconstruction process—from two-dimensional structural restoration to three-dimensional dynamic visualization—faithfully presenting the robe’s craftsmanship and wearing effects. The results demonstrate that the ceremonial robes of Qing emperors embodied ritual norms, political symbolism, and exquisite craftsmanship. Their digital restoration opens new technical pathways and perspectives for the precise documentation, in-depth study, and immersive presentation of clothing-related cultural heritage.
