<div><b><font size='5'>Understanding Use of Force</font></b></div><div>A Use of Force Incident refers to an event that may include multiple force types. This occurs when initial attempts to gain compliance are ineffective and more than one type of force is required to safely take an individual into custody. In some cases, it may be reasonable and necessary for multiple officers to use force during an incident, which will generate an increase in force types within that particular incident. Based on the above, the number of Use of Force Types in a given time period will generally be higher than the number of reported Use of Force Incidents. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><font size='5'>Types of Force</font></b></div><div><b>Physical Force</b> - any force used by an officer to control, apprehend or subdue an arrestee or detainee that does not involve any other assigned tools (such as OC, CEW, Canine, etc.) which results in an injury or complaint of an injury.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>OC (oleum capsicum)</b> - more commonly referred to as pepper spray, is an aerosol defense spray utilized to cause temporary discomfort in order to distract from assaultive behavior and allows an officer to affect an arrest using minimal force. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>CEW (Taser) </b>- a device that uses an electric current to affect the central nervous system of an individual that poses a risk of immediate danger to the officer, another person, or themselves. The CEW (Taser) is utilized to gain compliance and prevent an escalation of force.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique)</b> - A trained technique utilized to safely end a vehicle pursuit. Officers utilize their patrol vehicle to make contact with the suspect vehicle and bring it to a stop. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>Chemical Munitions</b> - This category includes pepper foggers, gas, and pepper balls which are typically deployed in large-scale events or tactical situations and only by members of the department specifically trained with those tools.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Impact Weapons</b> - Any assigned tool used to strike an individual that when properly used is not likely to cause serious injury or death. These tools include the ASP baton, flashlight, and the multi-launcher (sponge/rubber bullets). </div><div><br /></div><div><b>Canine </b>- Occurs when a trained police canine bites a subject who poses an imminent threat to an officer or the general public. </div>
