This dataset is derived from the research paper of the project studying molecular regulation of secondary growth and environmental stress response mechanisms in forest trees. The core content of this dataset demonstrates that divergent selection pressures accelerated the differentiation of Populus and Salix. Populus and Salix share a common tetraploid ancestor, yet which genus is evolutionarily more primitive remains a debated topic. In both species, distinct chromosomes have independently evolved into sex chromosomes. Analysis of the ω ratio and PGRS in the sex-determining regions of Salix and Populus revealed that, at the chromosomal level, the sex chromosomes of Populus have the lowest gene density among all its chromosomes, whereas this feature was not observed in Salix, suggesting that the two lineages may have inherited earlier sex chromosomes from their common ancestor. The findings of this study provide critical insights for advancing our understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying the evolution of Populus and Salix.
