Non-Violence? Political Protest Strategies and Political Outcomes, 2012

This project examines the conditions that foster the use of non-violent as opposed to violent tactics, focusing on the interaction between specific characteristics of different organizations, their constituencies, the state, and external actors. It examines why organizations seeking political change choose specific tactics; when non-violent actors can be an effective force for political dissent; how decisions to use violence or non-violent means affect the strategic interaction between the state and opposition groups; whether non-violent movements tend to involve specific types of actors and interests compared to violent organizations, as well as how states and international actors can prevent conflicts from escalating to violence.

本研究旨在探究推动非暴力策略相较于暴力策略得以应用的前提条件，重点关注不同组织的特定特征、其支持者群体、国家与外部行为体之间的互动关系。本研究同时探讨以下核心议题：寻求政治变革的组织为何会选择特定行动策略；非暴力行动者何时能够成为政治反抗的有效力量；使用暴力或非暴力手段的决策如何影响国家与反对派团体之间的战略互动；相较于暴力组织，非暴力运动是否往往会涉及特定类型的行动者与利益诉求，以及国家与国际行为体应如何防范冲突升级为暴力事件。
