Two different trees were picked in the York University woodlot at random which constituted one pair. Trees in the pair were given a designation, a coefficient that indicated the pair number and the variable "a" or "b" which differentiated the trees in a pair. Using a measuring tape the distance between the two selected trees was measured in meters. Subsequently the diameter at breast height of each tree in the pair was measured using a measuring tape in centimeters. Next the condition of each tree within the pair was determined to be "dead", "living" or "flourishing" and was given a rank "0", "1", or "2" respectfully. The condition was determined by estimating the percent of the tree that was covered in green canopy in respect to the tree size. Trees were given rank "0” if only 0-20% of the tree was covered in green canopy in respect to tree size. Trees were given rank "1" if 20-60% of the tree was covered in green canopy in respect to tree size. Trees were given rank "2" if 60% or more of the tree was covered in green canopy in respect to tree size. This entire process was repeated an additional nine time for a total same size of ten.
