The Spain site in Fort Randall Reservoir, S. Dak., was excavated under a cooperative agreement between the University of Kansas and the United States National Park Service as a part of the InterAgency Archeological Salvage Program in the Missouri Basin. Gordon C. Baldwin, Merrill J. Mattes, John M. Corbett, and Paul L. Beaubien of the National Park Service were helpful in many ways. The Missouri Basin Project of the Smithsonian Institution, through Robert L. Stephenson, chief, was especially helpful in furnishing a vehicle for our use. The Corps of Engineers, United States Army, permitted excavation on land acquired for the reservoir and made available to us the buildings of the Jewell Ranch as a base from which to carry out our work.
