The Presence and Perception of Ankyloglossia on Instagram

This study aimed to assess the representation of ankyloglossia (commonly known as tongue tie) on Instagram. Researchers collected over 43,000 Instagram posts related to ankyloglossia from April 2012 to March 2022, with 30,133 posts individually reviewed. They observed a significant increase in both the volume of ankyloglossia-related posts and their engagement in recent years. The study found that ankyloglossia has a growing and diverse presence on social media, reflecting authors' efforts to gain viewership and engagement. This mirrors its increased clinical visibility. Importantly, the study emphasized the need for healthcare professionals to monitor online discussions as unverified information and fearmongering related to healthcare can be prevalent. In summary, this research highlights the expanding influence of social media on discussions about ankyloglossia and underscores the importance of healthcare professionals staying informed and countering misinformation in these online spaces.
