Research Data Management Faculty Survey Report, University of Waterloo

This survey was conducted in order to become better prepared to support research data management (RDM) practices at the University of Waterloo in the Faculties of Engineering and Science. All ranks of faculty and post-doctoral fellows were included. This survey replicates the survey created and conducted at the University of Toronto. The goals were to: • determine how University of Waterloo engineering and science faculty and post-doctoral fellows manage and share research data beyond their project • determine how University of Waterloo Library might help to facilitate data management activities and thereby help support our researchers • understand some of the differences in research data management practices and needs across disciplines The results of this survey will also help the library support University Policy 73, Intellectual Property Rights, Section 9, Data Management which is “…concerned with the ownership of, and right to use, original data collected or measured in the course of teaching and research activities involving one or more members of the University.” A Principle noted in Section 9 states that “Members of the University have the obligation to protect and preserve, for a reasonable period of time (defined by the norms of the discipline), and to make available to other scholars and non-commercial users, the data on which their work is based.”

本调研旨在为更好支持滑铁卢大学（University of Waterloo）工程与理学院的研究数据管理（Research Data Management, RDM）工作做好筹备，调研对象覆盖所有职级的教职员工与博士后研究员。本次调研复刻了多伦多大学（University of Toronto）发起并实施的同类调研，其目标包括：
1. 明确滑铁卢大学工程与理学院的教职员工及博士后研究员如何在项目周期外管理与共享研究数据；
2. 探究滑铁卢大学图书馆可通过何种方式助力数据管理活动，从而为本校研究人员提供支持；
3. 厘清不同学科间研究数据管理实践与需求的差异。
本次调研结果还将助力图书馆落实《大学第73号政策：知识产权》第9条「数据管理」相关要求，该条款「涉及大学教职工参与的教学与科研活动中所采集或测得的原始数据的所有权与使用权问题」。该条款第9条载明的一项原则指出：「大学教职工有义务按照学科规范定义的合理时限，保护并留存其研究依托的原始数据，并向其他学者与非商业用户开放这些数据。」
