The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) of different VPH classes (in separate mixtures): straight chain alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons and cyclic/branched alkanes on the response of the indigenous micro-organisms in a gravelly sand using molecular biology techniques. An aerobic batch experiment was set up in order to monitor the level of biodegradation occurring within different soil systems and control.
