Use of video to promote skill development in loading machine operators

Effective feedback is an essential part of the training of logging machine operators. However, effective feedback is difficult to achieve within the environment of a logging operation. Video-based feedback can help improve operator performance by offering specific, timely and content-rich instruction. This research proposed a feedback support system that used a framework of beneficial loading operation practices alongside a video-based motion analysis application that could support trainers to provide relevant, timely, frequent and clear feedback to trainees. Using a pilot video, 11 experienced operators were reflectively interviewed to identify the 27 beneficial work practices that fulfill five different processes that make up loading operations. A panel of three (a trainer and two operators) were then trained in the use of the framework and an off-the-shelf video-based motion analysis app to capture and share video and then reflect on captured work practices over a period of 4 weeks. An evaluation of their assessment concluded that the proposed system has the potential to support trainers and trainees to have more fruitful feedback discussions.
