Oakland Mausoleum- Jasper Newton Smith

Jasper "Jack" Newton Smith was born on December 29, 1833, in Walton County, as one of six. Jack was in the Confederate Army from April of 1861 until August 7, 1863. He married twice in his life, first to Rebecca Hawk and had seven children, then in 1875 he married Frances Jackson, by 1901 he windowed until he passed in August 16, 1918. The Atlanta Constitution in 1905, written by R. J. Massey, M.D. wrote that Jack Smith was a "jack of all trades" - he was noted as a gifted singer, painter, carriage builder, distiller of the ardent, brickmaker, hotel and boarding housekeeper, and blacksmith. Although Massey claimed that Mr. Smith was not great at arithmetic, he was also a financier and real estate dealer. Jack also practiced law in his younger years.
