Urban built-up area of 14-19th centuries in China

This dataset rebuilds the built-up areas of Chinese cities of 14^th-19^th centuries by restoring the time and the scope of city walls. Through the collection and sorting of the <i>Local Chronicles</i> materials, the construction and reconstruction time of each city wall is obtained. The period in which the scope of the city wall unchanged is recorded as a lifetime of the city’s built-up area. Based on the urban morphology method, the <i>Local Chronicles</i> materials, the military topographic map of the first half of the 20^th century, and remote sensing images of the 1970s are used to spatialize the scope of the city wall. Finally, by correlating and integrating the spatial data of the city wall scope and the lifetime data of the urban built-up area, the spatio-temporal dataset of urban built-up areas of 14^th-19^th centuries in China is produced. This dataset is of great significance in the research fields such as global change and land use change.

本数据集通过复原14至19世纪中国城市城墙的修筑时序与空间范围，重建该时期中国城市建成区。研究团队通过收集整理地方志（Local Chronicles）史料，获取各座城市城墙的修筑与重建时间，并将城墙范围未发生变更的时段定义为该城市建成区的一个生命周期。基于城市形态学方法，结合地方志（Local Chronicles）史料、20世纪上半叶军用地形图以及1970年代遥感影像，对城墙的空间范围进行空间化处理。最终，通过关联并整合城墙空间范围数据与城市建成区生命周期数据，生成14至19世纪中国城市建成区时空数据集。本数据集在全球变化、土地利用变化等研究领域具有重要学术价值。
