One on one interviews with Scott Base personnel (staff, scientists, management, etc) investigating perceptions of Antarctic heritage

During two visits to Scott Base, the New Zealand Antarctic Research base in the Ross Dependency, semi-structured, one-on-one interviews were conducted with personnel at Scott Base including winter support staff, summer support staff, consultant or scientists, management, and members of the Antarctic community based in New Zealand. The aim was to attempt to establish what heritage meant to individuals from different backgrounds, all of whom have or have had active involvment in the New Zealand sector of Antarctica. A rudimentary typology of Antarctic heritage which identified four versions including emotional, cultural, natural and cultural and global was used. The data was analysed for repeated themes and topics. Heritage sites within the Ross Sea Region were also visited including Scott's 1902 Discovery Hut at Hut Point, Shackleton's 1908 Hut at Cape Royds, Scott's 1911 Terra Nova Hut at Cape Evans, Observation Hill, Crater Hill, Arrival Heights and Castle Rock to be able to add to discussions regarding tourism in this area and to converse about shared experiences as visitors as in some cases it was a vital factor in getting deeper engagement from a number of participants.
