根據美國國家海洋暨大氣總署(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA)針對海洋廢棄物分解微小粒子(體積尺寸小於5毫米之廢棄物)進行數量研究的相關分析資料顯示,有極大的占比為塑膠微粒(Microplastics, MPs),其中大多的塑膠微粒來自於大型塑膠碎裂而成,小部分來源則是各種塑膠原料。塑膠本身除了可能具有塑化劑毒性存在外,其不易分解的特性亦會致使海中生物攝食,造成生物累積有毒汙染物質的情形。
According to analytical data from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) regarding quantitative studies on microparticles derived from degraded marine waste (defined as waste particles with a size smaller than 5 mm), the vast majority of these particles are microplastics (MPs). Most of these microplastics originate from the fragmentation of larger plastic debris, while a small portion comes from various plastic raw materials. In addition to the potential toxicity of plasticizers contained in plastics themselves, their resistance to degradation also leads to their ingestion by marine organisms, resulting in the bioaccumulation of toxic pollutants.
