Green alga (picoeukaryote) from the Arabian Gulf (UAE) sequenced at >800x coverage with high-quality PCR-free Illumina paired-end reads. Green marine algae are sparsely represented in sequence databases compared to their (many times less diverse) angiosperm counterparts. However they play important roles in nutrient flow through ecosystems and have shown evidence to also play roles in gene flow from prokaryotes to higher eukaryotes. In addition, microalgae are quickly becoming excellent producers for commercially valuable compounds and stand as one of the only viable foodstuffs for rapidly declining global fisheries.
