San Telmo: the archaeological investigation in the Antarctic in order to locate the wreck of the Spanish ship San Telmo, to identify it and examine the environment (archaeology) of the wreck resting site.

We can point out some of the results we obtained during the project San Telmo:
It was the first attempt to prepare an underwater and a land archaeological
survey in the Antarctic, preliminary verifying the conditions and possibilities
to carry on such a project.

The wreck site was examined in order to conduct appropriately the future
survey. The work site must be free from the ice during the Antarctic summer
period. The area and especially the shipwreck resting place which would be
affected by the future survey were examined using technological (robots, boats
equipped with detection device) and human resources (divers). It was agreed on
the material, its amount, the requirements, and the sites of embarkation or
arrival, as well as the crew members.

Contacts with the Chilean staff of INACH, which would participate in the
consequent periods of the research, were established.

Durante el Proyecto San Telmo correspondiente a la fase de esta accion
especial, tuvo como resultados

Dado que por primera vez se iba a plantear una actividad arqueologica
subacuatica y terrestre en tierras antarticas, verificando las condiciones y
las posibilidades de llevar a la practica un proyecto de estas caracteristicas.

Se comprobo la zona a explorar porteriormente, precisando las posibilidades y
el alcance de la actuacion futura. La zona de trabajo debe estar desprovisto de
hielos en la etapa estival antartica.

Se verificaron las condiciones de la zona maritima en los parajes y
especificamente la afectada por las futuras prospecciones subacuaticas, tanto
por medios mecanicos (robots, embarcaciones con equipamiento de deteccion),
como por medios humanos (buceadores). Se determino el tipo de material,
volumen, necesidades, puntos de embarque o arribada en la zona, asi como el
equipo humano necesario.

Se establecieron los contactos con la contraparte chilena del INCACH, co la que
se realizaran etapas posteriores.
