High-resolution images of split sediment cores collected from the Semenov Hydrothermal Field region of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge during the RRS James Cook cruises JC224 (March - April 2022) and JC254 (October - November 2023) were obtained at the British Ocean Sediment Core Research Facility (BOSCORF) using a Geotek Core Imaging System (MSCL-CIS), equipped with a dedicated track for the Geoscan V linescan camera. Soon after splitting, to avoid capturing colour changes caused by e.g. oxidation, the half-round core samples are mounted on the track and the camera and LED lighting system automatically move over the sample to capture the image. The images show the lithology of sediment cores from 24 stations across the hydrothermally active region, which can be used as a reliable digital archive in publications. The data were collected as part of a PhD project funded under NERC's Ultramafic-hosted mineral Resource Assessment (ULTRA) project, grant reference NE/S004068/1, and the sediment cores are currently stored at the BOSCORF for long-term preservation.
