The turquoise killifish Nothobranchius furzeri (GRZ strain) is the shortest-lived vertebrate that can be kept in captivity. GRZ strain shows many of the characteristics of mammalian aging and is thus used as a model organism predominantly in aging research. Unlike the GRZ strain, the MZM strain of Nothobranchius furzeri has a longer lifespan and a slightly different morphology. The genome of this MZM strain could prove vital for various comparisons between the two strains.
