Updated Dataset - Tower Blocks UK: Leeds

This document outlines the changes and updates made to the dataset of multi-storey blocks built between 1955 and 1970 in Leeds, as originally sourced from University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh DataShare, Tower Blocks UK: Leeds (Glendinning, 2023), available at: https://doi.org/10.7488/ds/7464 I discovered that the Tower Blocks UK: Leeds dataset was incomplete and subsequently I’ve produced this document, which captures the corrections, additions, and clarifications to ensure the dataset's accuracy and completeness. 1. Integration of Information from “Tower Blocks UK: general dataset” https://doi.org/10.7488/ds/7470 The initial step involved identifying and transferring relevant data from the "Tower Blocks UK: general dataset.” The pertinent information was found towards the bottom of the spreadsheet (rows 4070–4280), which appeared to be a miscellaneous section. The relevant entries were copied into my updated “Tower Blocks UK: Leeds” dataset and highlighted in yellow to distinguish them from existing data. NB: Specifically for the Leeds Dataset, the pertinent information mentioned above can also be found in the original “Tower Block UK: Leeds Dataset” in rows 73-83 towards the bottom of the spreadsheet. The developments in question are all labelled as ‘Not identifiable’ under the ‘Image status’ column header. Once identified however, these developments were then carefully matched with their respective ‘image names’ and rearranged numerically within the spreadsheet. 2. Addition of Newly Suggested Data Several new pieces of information were introduced following a detailed review of the images. This new data has been carefully cross-referenced with external sources, including Google Earth, Google Street View, OS Maps, field surveys, and local knowledge. These “suggested additions” have been highlighted in light green within the updated dataset for transparency. 3. Correction of Errors During the review, a number of inaccuracies were detected and subsequently amended. These corrections are clearly marked in pink in the updated spreadsheet, making it easy to trace the modifications made throughout the dataset. Conclusion These systematic updates—ranging from data integration and verification to error correction and annotation—have significantly enriched the original “Tower Blocks UK: Leeds” dataset. The use of colour-coded highlights ensures full transparency of the amendments.
