In August 1979, following a request from the Department of Agriculture, the Treasury gave approval to a special scheme of assistance to Pasture Protection Boards which suffered loss or damage to their assets, from proclaimed major natural disasters. The scheme was intended to apply in a similar way to the scheme administered by the Department for Councils. The scheme gave: grants which would meet the full cost of emergency repair works to restore essential services; 75% of the costs of permanent restoration of the Boards' assets up to $100,000; and full costs for amounts in excess of $100,000. The Public Works Department was requested to administer the scheme.The scheme covered all aspects of the Pastures Protection Board, such as Travelling Stock Route fencing, structures at stock watering places and buildings, but not those normally covered by insurance. Although the Boards did not have legal responsibility for the costs of fencing abutting private property, consideration was to be given to justifiable claims. Restoration and repair work was to be made promptly by the Boards, and claims for financial assistance made to the local District Engineer.Initially only a few claims were submitted, and although the scheme has not been withdrawn no claims have been made since 1980.
