In the last few years, non-classified strains of the family Chlamydiaceae were encountered in epidemiological studies in birds. The present project on genome sequencing of strain 10DC88 was undertaken to identify the taxonomic position of these new strains. Meanwhile, strain 10DC88 has been proposed as the type strain of the new species Chlamydia avium.
