In 2020, European social systems that pay for eye exams favored those made by ophthalmologists over opticians or optometrists. For instance, the social systems of 30 European countries paid for a child's exam made by an ophthalmologist in 2020. On the other hand, only six countries paid for a child's exam when it was performed by an optician or an optometrist.
