Anna McMichael, ‘Music Published by W.H. Paling & Co. from 1890 to 1900 Held in Australian Public Libraries.’

This dataset of 373 items is based on an online library search of all music published by Palings in the 1890s. Over one-half of composers of published loose item sheet music were Australian or resident in Australia and 20% were women; the latter mostly Australian women who composed popular short pieces in the parlour music genre.Of the 305 sheet music items, 53% were solo or duo piano music, 39% were songs for voice and piano, and the remaining 8% were assorted works such as choral and brass band music.Many thanks to Jacqueline Waylen (Liason Librarian, Monash University) for her help with compiling this database.
