Elite Twitter Activity and Hashtag Dataset (2010–2021): Politicians, Business Leaders, and Celebrities

Overview This dataset contains longitudinal metadata on Twitter activity from 102 globally visible elite public figures spanning politics, business, and entertainment. The dataset supports research on elite communication dynamics, hashtag usage, temporal activity patterns, and behavioral responses to major societal events, including the COVID-19 pandemic. To ensure ethical sharing and compliance with platform policies, all privacy-sensitive information and tweet text have been removed. Only tweet identifiers and derived metadata are provided. Users may rehydrate tweet content using the Twitter API, subject to platform terms of service. Dataset Structure The dataset is organized into three top-level folders based on elite domain: /Businessmen /Celebrities /Politicians Each folder contains one Excel file per elite individual.File names correspond to the elite’s name with no spaces (e.g., BillGates.xlsx, TaylorSwift.xlsx). Elite Sample and Account Coverage The dataset covers 103 globally visible elite public figures distributed across three domains: Politicians and World Leaders (24), Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs (22), and Entertainers and Celebrities (56). The dataset is organized into three top-level folders based on elite domain: /Businessmen /Celebrities /Politicians Each folder contains one Excel file per elite individual.File names correspond to the elite’s name with no spaces (e.g., BillGates.xlsx, TaylorSwift.xlsx). To facilitate transparency and reproducibility, the tables below list all elites included in the dataset together with their public Twitter identifiers and approximate follower counts. Tweet Type Type of post: original tweet, retweet, quote tweet, or reply. tweet_id Unique tweet identifier issued by Twitter. No tweet text, user mentions, URLs, or personal data are included. Temporal Coverage Start: 1 January 2010 End: 31 December 2021 The dataset captures long-run baseline communication patterns as well as pandemic-period dynamics. Data Collection Source: Twitter API v2 (Academic Research access). Collection Unit: Individual elite accounts. Aggregation: Each row corresponds to a single tweet event. All preprocessing was conducted to remove potentially sensitive content while preserving reproducibility.
