Maximum and minimum global oil and gas rig count

The lowest international oil and gas rig count that was recorded since 1975 was in October 2020, at 1,016 rigs. This was due to the coronavirus pandemic and its adverse impacts on the oil and gas industry. Meanwhile, a peak in the number of active oil and gas rigs was recorded in the early 1980s, at 6,227 rigs.
