Stream and groundwater of the Shale Hills catchment in the Shale Hills Critical Zone Observatory in Pennsylvania were filtered through various pore-sized filters (5µm, 3µm, 1µm, 0.45µm, 0.2 µm, 100 Kda, 1 Kda). Groundwater samples were collected at various depths from W7, W8, W11, CZMW1, CZMW2, and CZMW4). All the filtrates were acidified to 2% (v/v) using nitric acid. Major cations were analyzed using a ICP-AES and minor and trace elements were analyzed using a ICP-MS. This work was funded by NSF Critical Zone Observatory program grants to C. Duffy (EAR 07-25019) and S. L. Brantley (EAR 12-39285, EAR 13-31726).
